Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The student successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by summarizing the main features of both charts and making appropriate comparisons. The overview captures the dominant categories, noting that private studios are the most preferred location and college studios the least, while also highlighting the age-related shifts in dance preferences. Key data points are correctly cited, such as private studios at 48% and ballet being most popular among children under 11 with around 600 students. The comparisons between age groups for tap and modern dance are also clearly reported. Minor issues include slight inaccuracies in phrasing, but overall the task is fully covered, warranting a solid Band 7.0 for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression. The essay is divided into a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs that logically separate the two charts. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader through the data, employing transition words such as 'Overall', 'Firstly', 'Additionally', 'Moreover', and 'Conversely'. However, referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as 'it's share' instead of 'its share', and some cohesive ties feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, demonstrating clear logical organization throughout, which aligns well with the Band 7.0 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'proportion', 'preference', 'categorized', and 'attendance'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'held the least favoured' instead of 'was the least favoured', 'showed a least attraction' instead of 'attracted the fewest students', and unnecessary word repetitions like 'student contributing'. Spelling and word-form errors, including 'it's share' and 'term' instead of 'terms', occasionally occur. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, these recurring inaccuracies limit the score to a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as subordinate clauses and comparative constructions. There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing throughout, including subject-verb agreement issues ('The charts illustrates'), incorrect prepositions ('in city of Australia', 'in term of'), and missing articles ('with about 525 students attendance'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but there are double spaces and minor slip-ups. Although these errors do not impede overall communication, they persist frequently enough to prevent the response from reaching Band 7.0, making Band 6.0 the most accurate descriptor.
