Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given pie chart illustrates the proportions by location of dance classes while the graph gives information on the number of student participation in different types of dance and their age group.
Overall, most of the dance classes were held in private studios. Ballet was most popular among students under 11, while modern dance was popular among students from age 11 to 16 years.
Most of the dance classes were held in private studios, contributing 48%, followed by school halls, available only after-school, at 24%. The community and other halls contributed 18%. Ultimately, the college-based studios were the least used location at only 10%.
Ballet was the most popular dance. Approximately 300 students from age 11 to 16 years and 600 aged under 11. The modern dance showed an opposite trend with around 300 under 11 students and roughly 520 students from age 11 to 16. Tap dance was almost equally popular among both age groups with the number of under 11 students slightly higher at 450 while the number of students from age 11 to 16 was around 420.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response covers all parts of the task by successfully reporting the key features of both the pie chart and the bar chart. You have provided a clear overview at the beginning, noting that private studios were the most common location and highlighting the contrasting popularity of ballet and modern dance across the two age groups. You also correctly cited specific data points, such as 48% for private studios and the student numbers for different dance types. However, your response has a minor structural flaw: you repeated the fact that private studios were the most popular location in both the second and third paragraphs. To reach a higher band, ensure that information is not redundantly stated, allowing for better development of all comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
Your writing is coherent overall, with a logical arrangement of information. The introduction clearly outlines what the charts show, followed by a general overview, a paragraph dedicated to the location data, and a final paragraph detailing the types of dance classes. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different visual aids and themes. However, cohesion is at times a bit mechanical or repetitive, particularly with transitions like 'Most of the dance classes were held in private studios' appearing twice. Referencing and logical progression are generally clear, but smoother linking devices between sentences would elevate the flow of your writing.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'proportions', 'contributing', 'approximately', and 'opposite trend'. There are some successful attempts at less common vocabulary, and your word choices are generally clear enough to communicate your points without difficulty. However, there are minor awkward expressions, such as 'number of student participation' instead of 'number of students participating', and some minor repetition of basic verbs and phrases ('were held', 'contributed'). With greater precision in word choice and collocation, your lexical score would be higher.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses effectively (e.g., 'while the number of under 11 students was slightly higher'). There are several error-free sentences, demonstrating good control over basic grammatical structures. However, there are some noticeable grammatical inaccuracies, such as the sentence fragment 'Approximately 300 students from age 11 to 16 years and 600 aged under 11,' which lacks a main verb. Additionally, minor prepositional issues ('from age 11 to 16 years') persist. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the response from achieving a higher band score.
