Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by presenting data from both charts and making relevant comparisons. The overview accurately highlights that private studios were the most common location and modern dance classes were the most popular among teenagers. Data points are cited correctly, such as private studios at 48%, school halls at 24%, and specific numbers for dance types across age groups, like ballet having 600 students under 11. However, there is some repetition in the body paragraphs, particularly when summarizing the location data twice in different paragraphs. Despite this minor structural redundancy, all main features are well-reported and supported by the visual data, fulfilling the requirements for Band 6.5 to 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview paragraphs, and body paragraphs dedicated to separate charts. Cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'in addition', and 'overall' are used to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is handled reasonably well, separating the location data from the age-group dance class data. However, the organization feels slightly disjointed due to repetitive summary statements at the end of paragraphs, which interrupts the logical progression. Referencing and linking are generally clear, but smoother integration of transitional phrases would elevate the cohesion to a higher band.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, utilizing terms like 'proportion', 'participants', and 'category'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with reasonable success, such as 'accounted for the largest proportion'. There are some minor awkward phrasings like 'modern kinds of dance classes', but these do not impede communication. Spelling and word choice are generally accurate, placing the response solidly in Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating clauses introduced by 'whereas' and relative phrases effectively. There are a few grammatical slips, such as the incomplete clause in 'and the under-11 age group at around 300', which lacks a verb. Nevertheless, punctuation and basic sentence boundaries are controlled well, and errors do not impede understanding. The variety of structures combined with acceptable accuracy aligns with Band 6.0 descriptors.
