Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response covers all parts of the task by addressing both the pie chart and the bar chart. An overview is attempted, and key features such as private studios holding the largest proportion and ballet having high numbers are mentioned. However, there are some inaccuracies and confusion in the reporting of the data. For instance, the text states that 'Ballet class has the highest number of pupils' overall, whereas looking at the totals and age groups, modern classes reach 520 for 11-16 year olds, and tap/ballet have varying high counts. Furthermore, the writer misidentifies the data for tap when discussing the age breakdown, repeating ballet instead of tap ('Near about 450 students age below 11 and close to 420 age from 11 to 16 are taking ballet classes'). These data misreadings prevent a fully accurate representation of the visual information, capping the score at Band 5.5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text is organized into paragraphs with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and an overall statement. Cohesive devices are introduced to guide the reader through the data, such as 'Overall', 'To initiate with', 'Moving on to', and 'Finally'. However, referencing and progression are sometimes clumsy or repetitive, such as 'The second plot shows...'. Paragraphing is used to separate the different charts, which aids readability, but mechanical transitions and slight logical disjointedness place this criterion firmly in the Band 6 range.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, attempting some less common words and phrases like 'proportion', 'residents', and 'majority'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, such as 'studions' for studios, 'college based' without a hyphen, and inaccuracies in data labelling ('tap' was incorrectly referred to as 'ballet'). While communication is not severely hindered, the repetitive use of basic terms and lexical slips restrict the score to Band 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as relative clauses and participial phrases ('attending by the residents', 'which are under 11 age'). There are, however, several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, including passive voice issues ('classes held' instead of 'classes are held', 'attending by'), missing prepositions, and tense inconsistencies. For example, 'students which are under 11 age and 300 fromm 11-16 are taking'. These frequent errors occasionally cause minor strain for the reader, aligning with Band 5.5.
