Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by addressing both the pie chart regarding locations and the bar chart regarding dance classes across age groups. An appropriate overview is provided, highlighting the most prominent locations and age-related preferences. Main features and comparisons are clearly reported, such as private studios being the most common location at 48% and the contrasting preferences for ballet among younger children versus modern dance for older teens. The data is accurately represented, and the student successfully avoids listing every single numerical data point while capturing the essential trends. Overall, the task is well fulfilled and satisfies the requirements for a high band score.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is grouped logically, starting with an introductory paragraph, followed by a general overview, a dedicated paragraph for the pie chart, and a final paragraph detailing the bar chart data. Cohesive devices are used appropriately, such as 'Overall', 'In terms of', 'Regarding', and 'In contrast', which guide the reader smoothly through the response. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and effectively to separate distinct visual elements and analytical points.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate and appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms related to graphical data representation and the subject matter, such as 'prominent', 'account around', and 'attracts'. There are some minor lexical or prepositional slips, such as 'account around' (missing 'for') and 'aged of 11-16 children attend to modern dance' (awkward phrasing and unnecessary preposition 'to'), but these do not impede communication. Less common vocabulary is attempted with reasonable success.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures with a generally good level of control. The student successfully constructs comparative and subordinate clauses, as seen in 'while college-based studios are the least' and 'ballet is the most popular among under-11 aged students, at approximately 620 compared with around 310 students'. Grammatical errors are occasional, such as the awkward phrase 'aged of 11-16 children attend to modern dance', but the majority of sentences are clear and error-free, ensuring that communication is never hindered.
