Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie chart compares the location of dance classes, while the bar chart illustrates the types of dance classes young people are joining in a town in Australia.
Overall, it is clear that private studios recorded the highest figures, whereas college-based studios was the lowest among all. Another notable feature is that ballet had more students under 11 while the modern had more students above 11.
Looking first at private studios, it accounted for largest proportion, at 48%, followed by school halls, at 24%. By comparison, community hall stood at 18% , while college-based studios represented 10%.
Turning to types of dance classes, the ballet stood at 600 for under 11 age group and half of it for over 11 students. Meanwhile, the tap showed a broadly similar number of students for both age-groups. Notably, the modern type of dancing class followed a different trajectory compared to the ballet. The over 11 students were considerably higher than under 11, at around 500 and 300 respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The candidate successfully addresses all parts of the task by covering both the pie chart and the bar chart. A clear overall trend is identified, highlighting that private studios were the most popular location and college-based studios the least popular. Key features and comparisons are well-reported, such as contrasting the under-11 and 11-16 age groups across different dance types (e.g., noting that ballet was more popular among under-11s while modern dance peaked in the older age group). The data points cited, such as private studios at 48% and ballet at 600 for under-11s, accurately reflect the provided visual data. The response meets all requirements for a Band 7 performance under this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The text is logically organised with a clear progression from an introduction and overview to specific body paragraphs detailing the charts. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with one paragraph dedicated to the location pie chart and another to the types of dance bar chart. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well to link ideas (e.g., 'Looking first at', 'By comparison', 'Turning to types of dance classes'), although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, contributing to an overall coherent piece of writing that meets Band 7 standards.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The candidate demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items and collocations such as 'recorded the highest figures', 'notable feature', 'largest proportion', and 'followed a different trajectory'. While there are a few minor lexical slips and awkward phrasings—such as omitting articles ('the modern' instead of 'modern dance' or 'the modern dance class') and a punctuation error ('figures, whereas')—communication is never impeded. The vocabulary used is sufficient for a Band 6.5 or solid Band 6, leaning towards Band 7 in terms of functional range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The candidate uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures with generally good control. Complex forms are successfully attempted, such as 'The pie chart compares the location of dance classes, while the bar chart illustrates...' and 'Another notable feature is that ballet had more students...'. However, there are some grammatical errors, particularly subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'college-based studios was the lowest' and 'it accounted for largest proportion' missing an article). Punctuation errors also appear, such as a missing space after commas ('figures, whereas' and 'classes, the'). Despite these minor flaws, meaning is clear throughout, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptor.
