The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The pie chart shows the locations of dance classes, while the bar chart compares the numbers of students participating in three types of dance classes in two age groups: under 11 and 11–16.

Overall, private studios were the most common location for dance classes, accounting for almost half of all classes, whereas college-based studios were the least common. In terms of dance types, ballet was considerably more popular among children under 11, while modern dance attracted more students aged 11–16. Participation in tap was relatively similar between the two age groups.

Private studios accounted for 48% of dance classes, making them by far the most common location. School halls used for after-school classes represented the second-largest proportion, at 24%, followed by community halls and other venues at 18%. College-based studios were the least popular location, accounting for just 10% of classes.

Looking at the types of dance, approximately 600 students under 11 participated in ballet, compared with around 300 students aged 11–16. The opposite pattern can be seen in modern dance, with approximately 520 students in the older age group compared with only 300 younger students. Participation in tap was much more evenly distributed, at roughly 450 students under 11 and 425 aged 11–16.
