IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The pie chart and bar graph provide statistics about different dance classes in a Australian town. Majorly, the information is provided about the location of dance classes and the types of dances which are taught to students.

The pie chart describes that almost the majority of dance classes are operated by private studios. Private studios operate 48% of total classes. Approximately, a quarter of classes are provided by schools in their halls after the study hours. one in every ten dance classes can be founded in colleges. 18% dance classes are managed at community halls and other places.

The bar graph shows the clear increasing and decreasing trend of the different dance types as we move across both age groups. Ballet is the most popular among the students under 11, while it is the least popular among the age group of 11-16. Vice-verca is true for the modern dance. The numbers of enrolled students in different types of dance classes for the age below 11 are: 600 in ballet, 450 in tap and 300 in modern. The same numbers for the age group 11-16 are: 300 in ballet, 420 in tap and 520 in modern.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student covers all parts of the task by reporting information from both the pie chart and the bar graph. Key features, such as private studios being the most common location (48%) and the contrasting popularity of ballet versus modern dance across the two age groups, are identified. However, the response includes some awkward phrasing and mechanical listing of raw data, such as "The numbers of enrolled students in different types of dance classes for the age below 11 are: 600 in ballet, 450 in tap and 300 in modern." While comparisons are attempted, the analysis of the bar graph could be better integrated rather than simply listing out figures. Nevertheless, all main trends are successfully captured and supported by the visual data.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response is organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction followed by separate body paragraphs for the pie chart and the bar graph. Logical progression is generally maintained. However, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or awkwardly used, such as "Majorly, the information is provided..." and "Vice-verca is true for the modern dance." Referencing is mostly clear, but the overall flow between sentences can feel slightly disjointed due to abrupt transitions when switching between data points.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate the statistical information clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as "operated," "proportion," and "enrolled students," but these are accompanied by lexical inaccuracies and non-standard phrasing like "Majorly" instead of "Predominantly" or "Mainly," and "Vice-verca" (spelled incorrectly as well as used slightly unidiomatically). Word choice is generally sufficient to convey meaning, but errors in collocation and spelling prevent the response from achieving a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as "Ballet is the most popular among the students under 11, while it is the least popular among the age group of 11-16." Control of grammar is fair, but there are noticeable errors including article misuse ("an Australian town" instead of "a" is actually correct, but minor errors like "one in every ten dance classes can be founded in colleges" use the incorrect verb form 'founded' instead of 'found'). Punctuation and sentence structures are generally controlled well enough to ensure communication is not impeded.
