The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 8.0)
The pie chart illustrates the distribution of locations where young people in an Australian town attend dance classes, while the bar chart compares the participation of two age groups (under 11 and 11-16) in three distinct types of dance.
Overall, private studios are by far the most popular venue for dance classes. Additionally, ballet is the most favored style among younger children, wheares modern dance attracts the highest number of older teenagers.
Regarding the location of dance classes, private studios account for nearly half of the total choice, standing at 48%. School halls used after school represent the second largest proportion at 24%, followed by community halls and other locations at 18%. In contrast, college-based studios are the least chosen option, making up only 10%.
In terms of dance types, ballet shows the largest age disparity, with around 600 children under 11 attending, double the figure for the 11-16 age group (about 300). Tap dance shows similar attendance figures across both age groups, with approximately 450 studnets under 11 and 420 students aged 11-16. Conversely, modern dance is predominantly popular among the older group, drawing just over 500 teenagers aged 11-16, compared to approximately 300 children under 11.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
The student covers all parts of the task well, providing a clear summary of both the pie chart and the bar chart. An effective overview is included, highlighting that private studios are the most popular venue and contrasting the preferences of age groups for dance styles. The data points reported are accurate and reflect the visual information, such as private studios standing at 48% and ballet showing 600 attendees under 11. Key features and comparisons are well selected and reported, meeting all the requirements of a Band 8 response for Task Achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0
The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression. Information is grouped sensibly, with the second paragraph giving the overview, the third paragraph addressing the locations, and the fourth paragraph detailing the dance types. Cohesive devices are used appropriately and without mechanical repetition, such as 'Regarding the location...', 'In contrast...', and 'In terms of dance types...'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and effectively. Cohesion is well managed throughout, earning a solid Band 8 rating.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
The student demonstrates a sufficient and flexible range of vocabulary suited to academic task reporting, utilizing terms like 'distribution', 'proportion', 'disparity', and 'predominantly'. There are a few minor spelling and typographical errors, such as 'wheares' instead of 'whereas' and 'studnets' instead of 'students'. However, these are occasional slips rather than systematic errors and do not impede communication. The lexical control is generally strong and appropriate for a Band 7 score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8.0
The response exhibits a good variety of complex structures alongside simple sentence forms, such as 'The pie chart illustrates... while the bar chart compares...' and 'ballet shows the largest age disparity, with around 600 children under 11 attending...'. The majority of sentences are error-free, and grammatical control is strong with correct subject-verb agreement and punctuation. The minor typos noted in lexical resource do not detract significantly from the overall high level of grammatical accuracy, justifying a Band 8.
