The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The charts provide information about the locations of dance classes attended by young people in an Australian town and the types of classes chosen by two age groups, namely those under 11 and those aged 11–16.
Overall, private studios are by far the most common location for dance classes, while college-based studios account for the smallest proportion. In terms of dance styles, ballet is the most popular among children under 11, whereas modern dance is preferred by those aged 11–16.
Private studios account for 48% of all classes, followed by after-school classes held in school halls at 24%. Community halls and other locations represent 18%, while only 10% of classes take place in college-based studios.
Regarding the types of classes, approximately 620 under-11 students attend ballet, compared with around 310 students aged 11–16. Tap attracts about 450 younger students and 430 older students. In contrast, modern dance is more popular among teenagers, with approximately 520 students, compared with only 310 under-11s.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student covers all parts of the task well, providing a clear and comprehensive summary of both charts. An effective overview is included, successfully identifying the overall trends (that private studios are the most common location and that preferences in dance styles shift between the two age groups). Main features and comparisons are appropriately reported, such as noting that ballet is most popular among children under 11 while modern dance is preferred by older students. Although some specific figures (e.g., around 620 for ballet compared to the exact transcription value of 600) vary slightly due to reading against gridlines, this is well within acceptable margins and fully meets the criteria for Band 7.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The response is logically organised and easy to follow. Progression is clear throughout, moving logically from an introduction and overall statement into detailed breakdowns of locations and then dance types. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the visual data. Cohesive devices are handled effectively without being overly mechanical, using phrases such as 'Overall', 'In terms of', 'followed by', and 'In contrast' to guide the reader smoothly through the comparisons.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The vocabulary used is sufficiently wide and precise for the task. The student successfully employs less common and topic-appropriate items and phrases, such as 'proportion', 'preferred', 'represent', and 'attracts'. Word choices and collocations are generally natural and accurate. There are no notable spelling or lexical errors that impede communication. While it stops just short of the rich, highly sophisticated control required for Band 8, the range and precision comfortably satisfy the Band 7 descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5
The student demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating relative clauses and comparative constructions effectively (e.g., 'while college-based studios account for the smallest proportion' and 'compared with around 310 students aged 11–16'). The majority of sentences are error-free, showing good control of grammar and punctuation. Errors are extremely rare or non-existent, reflecting a high level of accuracy that aligns well with the Band 8 descriptor.
