Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student attempts to address both parts of the prompt by describing the locations of dance classes and the types of dance by age group. However, the data reporting is somewhat inaccurate and incomplete. For instance, the modern dance figures for the 11-16 age group are misread as 'upto 510' rather than the approximate 520, and the description of the age groups for ballet ('ballet dance students were under 11 and they were upto 600 as compared to under 11 to 16 were only estimated 300') is confused and poorly expressed. The overview is repetitive, essentially restating the prompt rather than synthesizing key trends. This performance aligns with Band 5, as the response covers the task only partially with limited and sometimes unclear data reporting.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The text is organised into paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs covering the two charts. However, progression is hindered by repetitive phrasing and poor overall linking. The writer relies heavily on mechanical transitions such as 'Firstly,' 'On the other hand,' and 'Moreover,' which do not logically fit the contrast they attempt to establish. Referencing is frequently unclear, particularly in the final paragraph where sentences like 'The ballet dance students were under 11 and they were upto 600 as compared to under 11 to 16 were only estimated 300' create confusion about what is being compared. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion is faulty. This corresponds to Band 5 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently lifting phrases directly from the prompt such as 'location of dance classes' and 'types of dance classes'. There are numerous word choice errors and awkward collocations, such as 'various of dance lessons' instead of 'types of dance classes', 'figure of students' instead of 'number of students', and 'college based studios' lacking hyphens or proper phrasing. Spelling errors also occur, such as 'recored' instead of 'recorded' and 'commuinty' instead of 'community'. The lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for the task, fitting the Band 5 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts some complex structures, but these are frequently faulty and awkward. Sentences tend to be long run-ons joined by coordinating conjunctions or relative clauses, such as 'Overall, the chart below shows the location of dance classes held in different community halls, school halls, college based studios and in private studios and it also mentions the percentages with it.' Grammatical errors are frequent throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('the location of dance classes are') and incorrect prepositions ('upto 18% as compared to private studios it is upto 48%'). These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader, matching the Band 5 descriptors.
