IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The pie chart shows the locations of dance classes, and the graph shows the number of students taking different types of dance classes by age group.
Overall, private studios are the most popular location, while college-based studios are the least popular. In terms of dance types, ballet is more popular among children under 11, whereas modern dance is more popular in the 11 to 16 age group.
To begin with the pie chart, private studios account for the largest proportion at 48%. School halls make up 24% of the locations, while community halls and other places account for 18%. In contrast, college-based studios represent the smallest proportion at only 10%.
Looking at the graph, ballet has the highest number of students in the under 11 age group, with around 600 participants, but this drops to 300 in the 11 to 16 group. On the other hand, modern dance shows an increase, from 300 students in the younger group to over 500 in the older group. Lastly, tap dance has similar numbers for both age groups, with around 440 students in the under 11 group and 410 students in the 11 to 16 group.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of both the pie chart and the bar chart. You provide an effective overview at the beginning, noting that private studios are the most popular location and highlighting the contrasting age trends for ballet and modern dance. In the body paragraphs, you accurately select and report key data points, such as the 48% figure for private studios and the specific participant numbers for the different dance types across the two age groups (e.g., 600 for ballet in the under-11 group dropping to 300 in the older group). Comparisons between categories and age groups are made clearly and relevantly, meeting all requirements of the Task Achievement descriptor for a high band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
Your essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The response is divided into logical paragraphs, starting with an introduction and overall statement, followed by separate paragraphs for the pie chart and the graph data. You use appropriate cohesive devices to guide the reader smoothly from one point to the next, such as 'Overall', 'To begin with', 'In contrast', and 'On the other hand'. Referencing is clear, and the overall progression of information makes the response very easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient and effective range of vocabulary for this task, using terms such as 'proportion', 'participants', and 'increase' appropriately. While the vocabulary is largely standard rather than advanced, it is used accurately to discuss statistical data. Collocations are natural, and there are no noticeable spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. To push into higher band territory, you could incorporate slightly more sophisticated lexical items to describe trends and proportions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5
Your grammar and sentence structures are handled with good control. You successfully use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as concessive and comparative structures (e.g., 'while college-based studios are the least popular' and 'ballet has the highest number of students..., but this drops to...'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and punctuation is used correctly throughout the text. Minor slips are absent, demonstrating solid command over English grammar at this level.
