IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie chart illustrates the location of dance classes, and the graph represents the information on different types of dance classes by age group.

At a glance, private studios accounted for the highest proportion, whereas college-based studios represented the smallest location of dance classes. Overall, other places of dance studios are comparatively similar.

To begin, private studios accounted for the largest proportion at 48%, while college-based studios made up 10% of the locations of dance classes. However, the proportion spent on school halls was 24%. In addition, community halls and other locations accounted for 18% of dance classes.

Looking at the table, ballet dance was more popular in the 11 age group. Meanwhile, the 11 to 16 age group showed more interest in modern dance. Similarly, tap dance represented a slightly similar interest in both age groups, around 420 and 450 respectively. Lastly, the lowest membership in dance classes was ballet, around 300, and modern dance students also made up 300.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The student covers all parts of the task by reporting information from both the pie chart and the bar chart, providing a clear overview in the second paragraph. Key features are successfully identified, such as private studios representing the highest proportion at 48% and college-based studios being the lowest at 10%. Comparisons are also made between the age groups for different dance types. However, there are minor misinterpretations of the data in the final paragraph, where the writer states that ballet was more popular in the "11 age group" (the chart shows Under 11 had 600 students for ballet compared to 300 for 11–16) and claims that ballet and modern dance both had around 300 students at the low end, whereas ballet for 11-16 was 300 and modern for under 11 was 300. Despite these minor reading inaccuracies, the main trends are adequately presented.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall progression and is logically arranged into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing the specific charts. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the pie chart data from the table/bar chart data. Cohesive devices such as 'At a glance', 'To begin', 'Meanwhile', and 'Lastly' are employed to guide the reader through the text, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in structure. Referencing is generally clear, though paragraph two contains a slightly awkward phrasing in 'Overall, other places of dance studios are comparatively similar' which slightly disrupts the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms such as 'proportion', 'highest proportion', 'represented', and 'respectively'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, though some lexical choices are slightly unnatural or inaccurate, such as referring to college-based studios as the 'smallest location of dance classes' rather than the least popular location, or stating 'the proportion spent on school halls'. Spelling is generally accurate, and word choices do not impede communication, placing the response solidly in the band 6 range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating introductory clauses and relative structures effectively. Grammatical control is fairly good, with many error-free sentences, such as 'private studios accounted for the largest proportion at 48%'. However, there are some minor grammatical inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as 'ballet dance was more popular in the 11 age group' (missing 'Under') and 'tap dance represented a slightly similar interest'. Punctuation is generally correct and does not impede communication.
