IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
From the given charts, we get an idea of locations that are being used for dance classes held for young population, accompanied by statistics of how the type of classes varies across separate age groups. As for location, a clear dominance of private studios is evident. On the other side, in the bar chart we can see that among children under 11, ballet is the most popular type of dance class; whereas for the age group of 11-16, children are more inclined to modern dance.
Nearly half of the total possible locations consists of private studios only, whereas school halls stand at the second position comprising of around one-fourth of the locations, where the children attend dance classes after school periods. College-based studios take less than half of the proportion of School halls, standing at 10%. Close to one-fifth of total location consists of the Community halls and other options, making it the third in the ranking.
Types of dance classes presented in the bar chart are ballet, tap and modern dance. A clear trend of ballet being more popular than tap dance, and tap dance being more popular than modern dance can be noticed in the under 11 age group. Almost 600 children of this age group participate in ballet classes, and only half of this number attend modern classes, tap dance standing in the midway between them. An exact reverse trend is noticeable in the age group of 11-16, where only 300 kids are still interested in ballet. And the number of attendees keeps increasing for tap and modern dance classes, reaching above 400 and above 500, respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by covering both the location of dance classes and the types of classes across different age groups. The main features are clearly reported, such as the dominance of private studios at 48% and the contrasting preferences between younger children and older teenagers (ballet versus modern dance). Key comparisons are made effectively, such as noting that ballet is most popular for the under-11 group whereas modern dance peaks among 11-16 year-olds. The information is fully supported by accurate data from the visual source, maintaining a clear overview throughout. To reach the highest bands, the selection of data could be even more tightly integrated to highlight overarching trends with greater conciseness, avoiding minor generalisations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response maintains a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The essay is divided into sensible paragraphs, with an introduction, a body paragraph dedicated to locations, and another to the types of dance classes. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as "whereas", "On the other side", and "As for location", which help guide the reader through the data. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in structure. To move to a higher band, referencing and cohesion could be made smoother and more unobtrusive, ensuring that every sentence flows naturally into the next without relying on standard formulaic connectors.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, successfully utilising less common items appropriate for an academic task, such as "dominance", "proportions", "attendees", and "inclined". Word choices are generally appropriate for describing statistical data and trends, for instance, "exact reverse trend" and "reaching above 500". There are minor slip-ups or slightly awkward phrasings, such as "Nearly half of the total possible locations consists of" (where subject-verb agreement or collocation could be tighter). To achieve a higher band, a wider and more sophisticated range of academic vocabulary and collocations should be employed with greater fluency.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
A good variety of complex sentence structures is deployed, including relative clauses and participial phrases, such as "accompanied by statistics of how the type of classes varies" and "where the children attend dance classes after school periods". There are frequent error-free sentences, and the grammar and punctuation are generally well controlled. Minor errors do persist, such as "comprising of around one-fourth" (comprise does not take 'of') and "less than half of the proportion of School halls". To reach the highest tier, these minor prepositional slips would need to be eliminated, and an even wider range of fully flexible, error-free complex structures should be sustained.
