Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the visual data, reporting both the location of dance classes and the types of classes across different age groups. The main features are identified, such as private studios holding the largest proportion at 48% and ballet being the most popular among younger children at 600 students. Key comparisons are also attempted, like contrasting the participation rates in ballet versus modern dance. However, some interpretations stray into unsupported generalisations, such as claiming that interest in older dances declines as children get older. To reach a higher band, the analysis needs to remain strictly objective and fully develop comparisons without speculative commentary.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response attempts to organise information into paragraphs separating the overview, the pie chart, and the bar graph. However, the overall progression is disrupted by repetitive phrasing, erratic sentence structures, and mechanical linking devices. For instance, sentences are occasionally duplicated or fragmented, such as the repeated line about 'studying accounted at 24%'. Furthermore, referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the flow of ideas. To improve coherence, the writer needs to ensure logical sequencing between sentences, avoid repetition, and use cohesive devices more naturally.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic data points with terms like 'proportion', 'proportion accounted at 48%', and 'horizontal graph'. However, the range is limited, and there are noticeable word-choice and collocation errors, such as writing 'dance classes location' instead of 'location of dance classes', 'interrested' with a spelling error, and 'the less proportion' instead of 'the smallest proportion'. Attempts at less common vocabulary often result in awkward phrasing. To achieve a higher score, the student should expand their range of vocabulary for describing statistical data and improve spelling and word formation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar is inconsistent. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as missing prepositions, tense confusion, and awkward structural patterns like 'the more getting older the more the interest in old dances decline'. Other errors include 'devided to 4 parts' and 'young pople'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they cause strain for the reader. To move up to the next band, the writer must reduce the frequency of basic grammatical mistakes and demonstrate better command over complex sentence structures and punctuation.
