IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

From the given charts, we get an idea of locations that are being used for dance classes held for young population, accompanied by statistics of how the type of classes varies across separate age groups. As for location, a clear dominance of private studios is evident. On the other side, in the bar chart we can see that among children under 11, ballet is the most popular type of dance class; whereas for the age group of 11-16, children are more inclined to modern dance.

Nearly half of the total possible locations consist of private studios only, whereas school halls stand at the second position comprising around one-fourth of the locations, where the children attend dance classes after school periods. College-based studios take less than half of the proportion of School halls, standing at 10%. Close to one-fifth of total location consist of the Community halls and other options, making it the third in the ranking.

Types of dance classes presented in the bar chart are ballet, tap and modern dance. A clear trend of ballet being more popular than tap dance, and tap dance being more popular than modern dance can be noticed in the under 11 age group. Almost 600 children of this age group participate in ballet classes, and only half of this number attend modern classes, tap dance standing midway between them. An exactly reversed trend is noticeable in the age group of 11-16, where only 300 kids are still interested in ballet. The number of attendees keeps increasing for tap and modern dance classes, reaching above 400 and above 500, respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the task by addressing both the location of dance classes and the types of classes across different age groups. An effective overview is provided in the opening paragraph, capturing the main trends such as the dominance of private studios and the contrasting preferences between younger and older children. Key figures are accurately reported, for instance, noting that ballet attracts around 600 children under 11 while modern dance peaks for the 11-16 age group at over 500. Comparisons are made effectively throughout the text, providing a clear and fully supported summary of the visual data without unnecessary padding.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a clear overall progression and logical organization. Information is divided into logical paragraphs, with the first body paragraph focusing on locations and the second detailing the types of dance classes and age groups. Cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'on the other side', and 'nearly half' are used to connect ideas effectively, though some connectors are slightly mechanical or conversational. Referencing is generally clear, helping the reader navigate between the pie chart data and the bar chart figures smoothly, though a tighter integration between paragraphs could elevate the overall flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

A sufficient range of vocabulary is used with adequate flexibility and precision to describe statistical data. The writer successfully incorporates less common lexical items and phrases such as 'clear dominance', 'comprising around one-fourth', and 'reversed trend'. While word choices are generally accurate and appropriate for an academic context, there are occasional minor lexical awkwardnesses or slightly repetitive phrasings like 'types of dance classes presented in the bar chart'. Nevertheless, the vocabulary adequately conveys precise numerical and comparative information without impeding communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response employs a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, demonstrating frequent error-free sentences and solid grammatical control. The writer successfully uses subordinate clauses and participial phrases, such as 'accompanied by statistics of how the type of classes varies' and 'making it the third in the ranking'. Punctuation is handled well throughout. Although a few minor structural slips occur, they do not impede comprehension and the overall grammatical accuracy supports clear and precise reporting of the visual data.
