IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below give information on the location and types of dance classes young people in a town in Australia are currently attending.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given charts illustrate the data about the location and comparison between three types of dances taken by Australian youngsters classified into two age group ( under 11 and 11-16).
Overall, private studios are considered to be the most popular spot to the Australian where college -based studios are least famous. While ballet is more popular to the dancers who are in under 11, modern dance is considered more preferable to the teenage group who are in between 11 to 16 years old.
Private studios seem to be the well known venue as 48% young people like to practice here. After attending school 24% participants like to practice in school halls which make this location the second most popular studio. Only 18% youngsters like to go to the community halls and others. College based studios only can attract 10% of teenagers which make this venue the least significant one.
In bar chart, it is clear that ballet accounted for the largest proportion as 600 young people likely to take this dance session. Young people who are classified in 11 -16 age group are more interested in modern dance. Around 520 people take this dance class. Ballet and modern dance maintain same popularity to the two age group with 300 students. Tap dance holds almost same figure to all the students with around 450 figure.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting on both the location of dance classes and the types of dance across different age groups. An overview is present at the end of the second paragraph, highlighting the main trends such as the popularity of private studios and the age division between ballet and modern dance. However, some parts are treated less fully than others. For example, while the data for ballet and modern dance are discussed in detail, the reporting of tap dance is overly generalized, stating it holds "almost same figure to all the students with around 450 figure" without adequately comparing the exact numbers for the two age groups (450 for under 11 and 420 for 11-16). To reach a higher band, all key features should be fully elaborated with precise comparative statements rather than vague generalizations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from an introductory overview to body paragraphs dedicated to the pie chart and the bar chart respectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different visual data sets. However, cohesion at the sentence level is occasionally mechanical or faulty. Phrases such as "In bar chart" lack a necessary article, and referencing is sometimes awkward, as seen in "make this location the second most popular studio" where private studios were just identified as the first. To move to a higher level, the writer needs to employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure smoother transitions between sentences and paragraphs without repetitive structures.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as "proportion," "classified," and "significant." However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form throughout the response. For instance, phrases like "most popular spot to the Australian," "least famous," and "maintain same popularity to the two age group" show unnatural prepositions and awkward lexical choices. Additionally, there are minor awkward phrasings such as "around 450 figure." These errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score. To improve, the student should focus on learning natural collocations and precise vocabulary for describing statistical trends.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt at varied structures such as relative clauses and subordinate clauses. There are some grammatical errors and punctuation issues present, which are characteristic of this level. Examples include missing articles (e.g., "In bar chart"), preposition errors (e.g., "to the two age group"), and subject-verb agreement slips (e.g., "College based studios only can attract"). While these errors do not impede overall communication, they occur regularly enough to prevent a higher rating. To achieve a higher band, the student should aim for greater control over complex sentence patterns, article usage, and prepositions within grammatical structures.
