Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by selecting and reporting the main features from both the pie chart and the bar chart, such as noting that private studios were the most popular location at 48 percent and that modern dance peaked in the older age group. However, some parts are more fully developed than others, which is typical of this level. For instance, the discussion of the bar chart touches upon the data points for ballet and tap, but some figures and comparisons are slightly imprecise or under-developed, such as the awkward phrasing regarding the age groups. To reach a higher level, the response would need to extend and support all selected data more consistently and avoid any slight generalisation gaps.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear division into introduction, overview, and body paragraphs focusing on separate charts. Information and ideas are generally presented in a logical sequence. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, transitional phrases like 'Analysing the pie chart into more detail' and 'Moving towards the bar chart' feel somewhat formulaic, and referencing devices are occasionally unclear, such as the ambiguous pronoun use in 'to that of the remained sectors'. Paragraphing is used, but internal paragraph cohesion could be smoother. To achieve a higher level, the use of cohesive devices needs to be more flexible and natural, ensuring seamless progression throughout the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'proportion', 'approximately', and 'respectively'. However, there are noticeable vocabulary and word choice errors that prevent a higher score, such as 'directions of dance classes' instead of 'distribution', 'the remained sectors' instead of 'remaining sectors', and 'offsprings' to refer to children. Spelling is generally acceptable, but word choice inaccuracies and awkward collocations occur throughout the text, such as 'preffered the halls& other'. To improve, the student needs to expand their control of lexical precision and collocations to communicate ideas more naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like relative clauses ('which is attended by young individuals') and comparative forms. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but they rarely impede overall communication. Examples of grammatical lapses include awkward prepositional use and article errors, such as 'the bar chart provide the information type' instead of 'provides the information on the types', 'under the age 11' instead of 'under the age of 11', and subject-verb agreement slips. Complex sentence attempts are often somewhat faulty. To move to the next level, the student should aim to increase the proportion of error-free sentences and exercise tighter control over prepositions and article usage.
