Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response satisfies the requirements by addressing all parts of the visual data prompt, reporting the main features, and making relevant comparisons. The overview captures the highest and lowest locations and the age-related shift in dance preferences. The student successfully reports figures such as 48% for private studios and approximately 600 students for ballet in the under-11 age group. However, some parts of the task are slightly more developed than others, and the final paragraph unnecessarily repeats information already stated in the second paragraph, showing a slight lack of extension and balance characteristic of a response straddling bands six and seven. To move higher, the student should ensure all data points are integrated smoothly without repetitive summary statements.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to group information logically by chart type into separate paragraphs. However, cohesion is at times faulty and mechanical. There are repetitive transitional words and punctuation issues, such as the awkward capitalization in 'Whereas modern dance' and 'While only 10%', and the abrupt ending of the fourth paragraph leaving a dangling transition 'However, The pattern is different among thosed aged 11-16.' Furthermore, the opening word 'overall' is uncapitalized. Paragraphing is present, but the logical progression between paragraphs is slightly hindered by redundant overview remarks placed at both the beginning and the end. To improve, the student needs more flexible and accurate cohesive devices and smoother referencing.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'proportion', 'represent', and 'preference' (though some are misspelled or used with minor inaccuracies). There are several noticeable lexical errors including spelling mistakes ('attented' instead of attended, 'according' instead of accounting, 'choosen' instead of chosen, 'moden' instead of modern, 'thosed' instead of those) and minor word-choice slips. While these errors do not severely impede communication, they prevent the writing from achieving a higher band. To reach a higher level, the student must eliminate spelling errors and demonstrate more precise word choice and collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as introductory dependent clauses ('According to the pie chart, almost half...') and relative clauses. There are some grammatical errors and punctuation slips present throughout the text, including capitalization errors ('overall' at the start of the second paragraph, 'Whereas', 'While', 'The pattern') and missing articles or prepositions in phrases like 'college-based studio' (should be plural). However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the intended meaning without difficulty. To achieve a higher band, the student should use a wider variety of complex structures with greater control and eliminate basic punctuation and capitalization mistakes.
