Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie chart and line graph illustrate, the locations where young people of an Australian town attend dance classes and the type of dance they learn, categorized by age group.
Overall, private studios are the most convenient place for students, while Ballet is the most interested type of dance class among children under 11, in contrast modern is the favorite dance form for learners between 11-16.
Initially, nearly half of the students attracted to private studios as their class making them dominent location. School halls used for after-school programs account for 24%, whereas community halls at 18%. College based studios represents the smallest proportion, at just 10%.
Regarding the dance types, nearly 600 people below age of 11 interested in Ballet, that is making Ballet as the most favorite among them, followed by Tap at 450. Modern is the least interested by this category with 300 enrollments. On the other hand, Modern is the most popular dance with above 500 enrollments by the learners between 11-16, followed by Tap and Ballet with 410 and 300 respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response satisfies the requirements by covering all parts of the visual data prompt, providing a clear overview, and reporting key features and comparisons. For example, the student successfully contrasts the dominant role of private studios (48%) with the minor share of college-based studios (10%), and highlights the contrasting preferences between age groups, such as Ballet leading for under-11s (600) and Modern leading for 11-16s (above 500). However, the response sits at this level because some details are underdeveloped or slightly imprecise, such as describing community halls as being 'at 18%' rather than accounting for that proportion, and stating tap enrollments for the older cohort as 410 instead of the approximate 420 shown in the transcription. To reach the higher band, the student should ensure all data points are cited with complete accuracy and fully extend the commentary on the most significant trends.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a clear overall progression and coherent arrangement of ideas, moving logically from an introduction and overview into body paragraphs detailing the pie chart and then the line graph. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different visual elements. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas, such as 'Overall', 'Initially', and 'On the other hand'. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical or faulty, as seen in the slightly awkward comma placement in the opening sentence ('illustrate, the locations') and repetitive structural transitions. To progress further, the writer needs to employ a wider and more flexible variety of cohesive devices while ensuring referencing is consistently smooth and unobtrusive throughout the response.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
An adequate range of vocabulary is deployed for the task, successfully attempting less common items and lexical chunks such as 'categorized by age group', 'dominent location', and 'enrollments'. Communication is never impeded by lexical shortcomings. Nevertheless, the range is somewhat limited and contains noticeable lexical inaccuracies, such as misspelling 'dominant' as 'dominent', using 'interested type of dance' instead of 'popular', and awkward phrasing like 'least interested by this category'. To move up to the next band, the student must broaden their vocabulary range, demonstrate more precise control over word choices and collocations, and eliminate spelling and word-form errors entirely.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and comparative forms. However, the response contains a frequent cluster of grammatical errors that reveal a lack of firm control over complex structures. Examples include missing verbs or incorrect prepositional patterns such as 'community halls at 18%', 'people below age of 11 interested in Ballet, that is making', and 'Modern is the least interested by this category'. Punctuation is also problematic in places, notably the unnecessary comma separating the verb from its object in the first sentence. To achieve a higher band, the student must produce a higher proportion of error-free sentences and demonstrate greater accuracy when attempting complex grammatical patterns.
