Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the main parts of the task by reporting data from both charts, presenting an overview and some key figures such as the popularity of ballet for children under 11 and private studios as the top location. However, the development is uneven. The overview contains inaccuracies, such as stating that modern dance is preferred by children aged 11 to 16 when ballet actually leads in total numbers across groups or misinterpreting age categories. Furthermore, some data points are misreported or vaguely described, such as claiming tap participation is 'less than 450' for the older age group when the chart shows it at approximately 420. To reach a higher band, the response would need to provide a more accurate and fully extended overview that clearly highlights the most significant trends without factual errors.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response shows a basic, coherent overall arrangement with an introduction, an overview paragraph, a body paragraph on locations, and a body paragraph on types of dance. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes hindered by mechanical or repetitive cohesive devices, such as starting multiple sentences with 'there are' or repetitive sequencing words like 'afterward'. Paragraphing is attempted, but sentence boundaries are occasionally blurred by poor punctuation. Referencing is also somewhat unclear at times, making the logical flow disjointed. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices naturally, ensure smooth transitions between ideas, and maintain a clear, logical progression throughout.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for communicating the basic information, attempting some less common items such as 'comprises', 'participation rate', and 'preferred'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors in word choice, form, and spelling, such as writing 'attented' instead of 'attended', 'Tape' instead of 'Tap', and 'college-bases' instead of 'college-based'. Additionally, some phrases are awkward or unnatural, like 'illustrates us about' or 'dance classes location'. These inaccuracies indicate a limited range of vocabulary control. To move to the next band, the student must expand their lexical repertoire and eliminate basic spelling and word-choice errors by ensuring correct collocations and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing relies heavily on simple sentence structures, and attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty or awkwardly constructed. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including missing articles ('in last college-bases studios'), incorrect prepositions ('on different locations'), subject-verb agreement issues, and poor punctuation and capitalization. For instance, sentences often run together without proper punctuation. These errors cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a limited range of grammatical structures. To progress, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of complex structures with higher accuracy, paying closer attention to punctuation, articles, and basic sentence mechanics.
