Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by covering both the location of dance classes and the types of dance classes across different age groups. A clear overview is provided at the beginning, highlighting the main features such as private studios leading in location and the popularity of ballet and modern dance among specific age groups. Key data points are accurately reported and compared, such as private studios at 48% and college-based studios at 10%. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise or describe every single data point in detail rather than synthesising them more selectively, which keeps the response at this particular level. Ideas are generally well-extended, though some supporting details lean slightly toward listing numbers rather than fully analysing trends.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a logical sequence of information. It is divided into an introduction, an overview paragraph, and separate body paragraphs dedicated to locations and types of dance classes respectively. However, cohesion can sometimes feel a bit mechanical or heavy-handed, particularly through transitional phrases like 'The further analysis shows that' and 'Moreover'. Referencing and logical progression are generally clear, but paragraphing and the flow between sentences could be smoothed out to achieve a more natural and sophisticated progression of ideas throughout the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
An adequate range of vocabulary is employed for the task, allowing the student to successfully describe charts and percentages. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary and synonyms, such as 'pre-teens', 'juviniles', and 'top the comparison'. However, there are notable word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'draws attention on' instead of 'draws attention to', 'accounts the highest number of space', and spelling slips like 'suprisingly' and 'juviniles'. These errors do not impede communication, but they reflect a vocabulary control that is still developing towards more precise academic styling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to form relative clauses and comparative structures. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly involving subject-verb agreement and prepositions, such as 'the private studios accounts', 'the location dance lessons are provided', and missing prepositions in phrases like 'accounts at only 10%'. Punctuation slips also occur, such as missing spaces after commas and brackets like 'School halls(after-school)'. While these errors rarely impede overall communication, they persist throughout the response and limit the grammatical score.
