Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by covering both charts concerning the location of dance classes and the types of classes broken down by age group. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting key features such as the dominance of private studios and ballet. However, some parts are developed more fully than others; while the data for dance types is supported with specific approximate figures like "approximately 600", the discussion of locations in the third paragraph relies heavily on percentages without fully expanding on comparisons or integrating all details from the pie chart effectively. The selection of main features is generally accurate, but the lack of deeper extension in certain sections keeps the response at this level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from an introductory overview to body paragraphs detailing location data and dance type statistics. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different visual elements. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, seen in abrupt transitions such as starting sentences with "But, more student..." and "And only 300 students...". Referencing is occasionally unclear, and cohesive devices are somewhat repetitive, indicating that while the organization is adequate, the flow lacks the flexibility and smoothness required for a higher band.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as "illustrates", "demanding", and "participants". There are noticeable lexical and word-form errors, such as writing "different type of locations" instead of "types", "fare share" instead of "fair share", and pluralization issues like "more student" and "Locations has". While these errors occur, they do not severely impede communication. Less common vocabulary is attempted, but occasional inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing prevent the lexical range from reaching a higher standard.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over basic structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ("private studios is", "College-based studios remains", "Their are three types"), incorrect prepositional use, and awkward punctuation choices (starting sentences with conjunctions). Although these errors do not impede overall comprehension, the presence of frequent grammatical inaccuracies and limitations in the range of error-free complex structures keeps the score at this level.
