Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially, presenting some key data from both charts but failing to provide a well-developed overview or fully coherent summary. The student successfully identifies some proportions for the location of dance classes (such as 48% for private studios and 18% for community halls) and mentions details about age groups in the second chart. However, the information is presented in a mechanical, fragmented way without a clear overarching trend. Furthermore, there are several inaccurate readings of the data, such as claiming private studios have '44%' instead of 48% and misinterpreting the numbers for modern and ballet classes across the age brackets. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to select and report the main features more accurately and include a clear, cohesive overview of the overall trends.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response shows some basic organisation, dividing the text into an introduction, body paragraphs for each chart, and a brief conclusion. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression, and the logical links between ideas are frequently awkward or missing. Cohesive devices are used in a very repetitive and mechanical manner, such as starting multiple sentences with 'The first one is' or 'The second chart shows'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal flow of sentences is disrupted by poor transitions and run-on structures. To improve cohesion, the writer should use a wider variety of cohesive ties, ensure referencing is clear, and structure the body paragraphs so that comparisons and relationships between the data points are logically developed rather than merely listed.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task, containing frequent errors in word choice, word form, and spelling that occasionally impede communication. Words like 'youngester', 'recentaly', 'Collage-based', 'futhermore isthat', and 'conclution' demonstrate weak control over basic spelling and word formation. The student relies heavily on repetitive language from the prompt ('dance classes', 'young people', 'student') and struggles to paraphrase effectively. Less common vocabulary is attempted with poor accuracy, such as 'first round chat'. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their lexical repertoire, learn correct spellings of common academic terms, and demonstrate greater precision in word choice and collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical range is very limited, relying predominantly on simple sentences and basic structures that are frequently marred by errors. Attempts at more complex sentences result in faulty structures and severe punctuation issues, such as comma splices ('This charts shows a information about a location and dance types in youngester in australia, And also howmany people recentaly joining this dance classes'). There are frequent errors in verb forms, subject-verb agreement, articles, and prepositions, including 'This charts shows', 'howmany people recentaly joining', and 'in under 11 around 300 sudent'. These frequent errors cause considerable difficulty for the reader. To progress, the student needs to improve control over basic sentence boundaries, verb tenses, and grammatical agreement.
