Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting information from both the pie chart and the bar chart, providing an adequate overview in the second paragraph. Key features such as the dominance of private studios (48%) and ballet for the under-11 age group are highlighted. However, some areas are under-developed or contain factual inaccuracies. For instance, the student states that school halls recorded 'the half of private studios, at 48%', which misinterprets the data (school halls are actually 24%) and causes confusion with the percentage already cited for private studios. To reach a higher level, all data points should be checked carefully against the visual stimulus to ensure accurate reporting without self-contradiction.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at paragraphing, separating the introduction, overview, location details, and dance type details. Logical progression is established through introductory phrases like 'Overall,' and 'In addition,'. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For example, the transitional phrase 'Therefore,' is used inappropriately to introduce a contrasting or supporting point about ballet classes rather than a logical consequence. Furthermore, referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'Remained 18% location of dance classes', which lacks smooth integration. To improve, cohesive devices must be chosen to reflect the exact logical relationship between ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common terms such as 'proportion', 'accounted for', and 'approximately'. However, there are notable word choice and collocation errors that prevent a higher score. For example, phrases like 'accounted the highest figure' omit the preposition 'for', and 'Remained 18% location' should be phrased as 'The remaining 18% of locations'. There are also awkward phrasings such as 'five fold of college-based studios' instead of 'five times that of college-based studios'. These lexical slips do not impede overall communication but show limited precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and comparative structures. However, there are some noticeable errors in grammar and punctuation. Issues include missing prepositions and incorrect verb complementation, such as 'accounted the highest figure for location, While college-based studios location accounted smallest share' (missing articles and incorrect capitalization). Punctuation is also erratic, with unnecessary commas and capitalization mid-sentence, such as 'While' and 'Whereas' starting clauses with lowercase or uppercase inconsistently. While these errors rarely impede communication, they reflect the characteristics of a developing grammatical control.
