Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting data from both the pie chart and the table, selecting main features such as the dominance of private studios at 48% and the highest age group numbers for ballet (under 11) and modern dance (11-16). However, the information is somewhat unevenly developed. While the overview attempts to summarise the visual data, it contains confusing phrasing and minor inaccuracies, such as misinterpreting the chart types (referring to a table as a chart and stating that tap had 150 students for under 11 instead of the approximate 450 shown). Some ideas are under-developed or unclear due to expression issues, but the core features of the prompt are nonetheless discernible.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a coherent overall arrangement, divided into clear paragraphs including an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs dedicated to each visual element. However, cohesion is frequently faulty and mechanical. The student relies heavily on repetitive transitional phrases like 'According to the pie chart' and 'According to the the table' rather than more natural linking devices. Paragraphing is present, but referencing is sometimes unclear, and the lack of proper spacing and punctuation (e.g., missing spaces after commas and periods throughout the text) disrupts the logical flow and progression for the reader.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, but the range is limited and frequently impaired by word choice, collocation, and spelling errors. The student attempts less common vocabulary items (such as 'dominance' or descriptive terms), but encounters noticeable issues with word forms and spelling (e.g., 'inconstrats', 'locatrion', 'xisiten', 'Australlian', 'bconsumed', 'collage-based'). While communication is generally maintained despite these flaws, the high frequency of lexical slips and awkward phrasing prevents the response from achieving a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in basic sentence structure, article usage, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions (e.g., 'the types of dance classe by age group represents in the table', 'the location of dance classes of private studios obeserved a large locatrion', 'the numer of students start with 0 to 700'). Punctuation is also problematic, with missing spaces after punctuation marks and run-on phrasing. Although these errors do not completely obscure the meaning, they cause difficulty for the reader and reflect a limited command of grammatical structures.
