Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pie chart illustrates the location of dance classes in Australian town, while bar chart shows the three types of dance among the different age groups, measured in numbers.
Overall, most of the dances were held in the private studios, whereas just few dances organized in college studios. Modern dance is one of the most popular types in 11-16 years age group, while pupils who were under 11 prefer ballet dance.
Half of the total dance classes were held at private studios, at 48%, while half of that number arranged in school-halls after school session. Community halls & other accounted for 18% of proportions, while just 10% of dances were organized in college-based studios.
By age group, nearly 600 students prefer ballet dance who were under 11, while approximately 450 learners attend tap dance, and just 300 pupils prefer modern dance in the same age group. More than 500 students from 11-to-16 years children prefer modern dance, followed by nearly 400 students participated in tap, and just 300 learners prefer ballet.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting on both the location of dance classes and the types of dance across different age groups. An appropriate overview is provided, highlighting key general trends such as the dominance of private studios and the varying preferences between age groups. Key data points are correctly cited, such as the 48% figure for private studios and the specific participation numbers for ballet and modern dance. However, the response sits at this level because some ideas are slightly under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies in interpretation, such as referring to the bar chart data as 'dances' rather than students, and describing 'half of that number arranged in school-halls' when 24% is actually half of 48%. To reach a higher band, the reporting of data needs to be more precise and fully integrated with clearer comparative analysis.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from an introductory overview to body paragraphs covering location and age group breakdowns respectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different visual data sets. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas, such as 'Overall', 'while', and 'By age group'. However, referencing and cohesion occasionally feel a bit mechanical or repetitive, as seen in the frequent use of 'while' and 'just' to contrast data points. To achieve a higher standard, the writer needs to employ a wider and more flexible variety of cohesive devices to manage referencing more smoothly without relying on repetitive transitional structures.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying information about percentages, proportions, and student numbers. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items such as 'proportion', 'illustrates', and 'accounted for'. However, there are notable word choice and phrasing inaccuracies that prevent a higher score, such as referring to the charts measuring 'numbers' rather than categories of students, and missing articles in phrases like 'in Australian town' and 'while bar chart shows'. Spelling is generally accurate, but the lexical range lacks the precision and flexibility characteristic of higher bands. To improve, the writer should focus on precise collocations and ensure appropriate article usage with countable nouns.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures successfully, such as 'while pupils who were under 11 prefer ballet dance'. There are some grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and tense consistency, such as 'most of the dances were held' mixed with present tense descriptions, and awkward relative clauses like 'nearly 600 students prefer ballet dance who were under 11'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and errors rarely impede communication. To reach a higher band, the writer must produce a greater proportion of error-free complex sentences and maintain strict consistency in tense usage when reporting static chart data.
