Overall, the pie chart shows that the largest number of classes are held in private studios, while the college-based studios are used occaisonally. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by covering both the location of dance classes and the types of classes across age groups. A clear overview is provided at the beginning, highlighting key trends such as the dominance of private studios and the varying popularity of dance styles between the two age groups. Main features are well selected and reported, with appropriate comparisons made between the categories. For instance, the student notes that private studios account for the highest proportion at 48 percent and accurately compares the preferences of the under-11 and 11-16 age cohorts. While the ideas are well supported with data from the charts, there is a minor tendency to over-generalise or slightly group certain statistics, which places the response securely at this solid level rather than higher. Overall, the information is accurately extracted and presented without any major omissions of crucial details.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay displays a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Information is grouped sensibly, beginning with an introductory overview paragraph, followed by a summary of the location data, and concluding with details on the specific dance types. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to connect ideas, such as 'Overall,' 'On the other hand,' and 'respectively.' Paragraphing is managed sufficiently and appropriately, separating the pie chart data from the bar graph details into distinct, readable sections. Although referencing and flow are generally clear, a slightly more sophisticated integration of cohesive links between sentences would be necessary to reach the highest bands. Nonetheless, the overall structure allows the reader to follow the report effortlessly.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and precise reporting terms such as 'proportion,' 'respectively,' and 'cohort.' However, there are a few lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors, such as 'younnger' and 'occaisonally,' alongside slightly awkward phrasings like 'are on top.' Word choice is generally sufficient to convey meaning clearly, but occasional slips in collocation and form prevent the response from achieving a higher mark. The vocabulary used allows for adequate flexibility in describing percentages and quantities, but greater precision and a wider variety of academic synonyms are needed to demonstrate superior lexical control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and comparative structures effectively. There is good control over basic sentence patterns, and many sentences are error-free. However, some grammatical errors persist, such as article omissions or slight misuses in prepositional phrases like 'in a town of Australia' instead of 'in a town in Australia,' and minor subject-verb agreement slips. Punctuation is generally handled well, and the errors present do not impede communication. To reach the next level, the student would need to produce a higher frequency of error-free complex sentences and eliminate minor slip-ups in articles and prepositions.
