Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting data from both charts regarding locations and types of dance classes. An overview is attempted at the beginning of the second paragraph, mentioning the majority in private studios and the figure for school halls. However, some parts are developed more fully than others; while the location data is broken down with percentages, the data for dance types and age groups is described rather vaguely without utilizing the exact figures provided in the visual data. For instance, the number of students taking ballet or modern dance is not precisely quantified, leading to under-developed comparisons between the two age groups.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The text displays a coherent overall arrangement and attempts to group information into logical paragraphs, with the first body paragraph focusing on locations and the second on types and age groups. However, the progression is sometimes hampered by mechanical and repetitive cohesive devices, such as starting multiple sentences and clauses with phrases like 'and also there are', 'as well there are', and 'at last'. Paragraphing is also slightly irregular, with the introduction merged into the first sentence of the response. Referencing and logical transitions between sentences require smoother integration to ensure a clearer flow of information.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic statistical information using terms such as 'illustrates', 'majority', and 'proportion' or numbers. However, the range is limited and there are notable word choice and spelling errors, such as 'mejorty' instead of majority, 'arround' instead of around, and 'collage-based' instead of college-based. The student attempts less common vocabulary, but these inaccuracies and spelling slips occasionally detract from the precision of the report, though they do not seriously impede overall communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response employs a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, such as relative or coordinate clauses, but control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are frequent errors with articles, prepositions, and plurals, including 'the information on' instead of simply 'information', 'different type of age group' instead of 'types of age groups', and 'dance classes are doing' instead of 'are conducted' or 'take place'. Punctuation is also weak, with sentences running together or lacking proper capitalization at the beginning of paragraphs and sentences, reflecting frequent minor errors.
