Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response partially addresses the task by reporting some main features and making basic comparisons. However, there are notable omissions and inaccuracies in how the data is interpreted. For instance, the overview contains a confusing contradiction by stating that 'most classes are running in private studios whereas majority are learning ballet dancing,' which conflates location data with class types. Furthermore, details regarding age groups and types of dance classes are somewhat repetitive and lack clear synthesis. While the figures for locations (e.g., 48% in private studios) and some specific data points are mentioned, the overall selection of information lacks a fully developed overview and consistent precision.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a basic overall arrangement, beginning with an introductory sentence, followed by an overview, a paragraph on locations, and a final paragraph on class types and age groups. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression between ideas, and the logical flow is occasionally hindered by abrupt transitions and mechanical cohesive devices. For example, the phrase 'Talking about locations' introduces the second body paragraph rather simplistically. Referencing and paragraphing show some organization, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs can be repetitive and difficult to follow, contributing to an overall sense of disjointedness.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic information about the charts. The student attempts some less common vocabulary and topic-related terms, such as 'college-based studios', 'community halls', and 'modern category', but also makes noticeable errors in word choice and collocation. Examples include writing 'category of dances' instead of 'types of dance' and 'recorded lowest' rather than 'recorded the lowest figure'. Furthermore, proper nouns are mishandled with capitalization issues like 'australia'. These lexical slips and inaccuracies occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader and restrict the range to a basic level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response features a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple or straightforward complex forms. When the writer attempts more complex formulations, errors emerge. Frequent mistakes include missing articles ('have accounted lowest', 'is share by'), preposition issues ('in a town of australia'), and subject-verb agreement or auxiliary errors ('It is confirmed that most classes are running... whereas majority are learning'). Punctuation and capitalization are also inconsistent, as seen in the lowercase 'australia' and double spacing in the final paragraph. These frequent errors in grammar and mechanics require the reader to occasionally puzzle over the intended meaning.
