Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response covers both parts of the visual data by presenting information on the location of dance classes and the types of classes across two age groups. There is a general overview provided in the opening paragraph and near the end, although the positioning of ideas is slightly disorganised. While the main features are touched upon, such as private studios being the most popular location and the preferences for ballet versus modern dance, some details are under-developed or imprecise. For example, the text states that older people take the lowest classes of ballet followed by 300, which slightly misinterprets the data for the 11-16 age group. To reach a higher level, the response would need to present a clearer, more fully developed overview of the main trends without lapses in data reporting.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response attempts an overall organization by dividing the text into an introduction, body paragraphs focusing on different charts, and a conclusion, which gives it a visible structure. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression, and the logical sequencing between sentences occasionally breaks down. Cohesive devices are used, but they are sometimes repetitive or mechanical, such as the frequent use of 'is followed by' and 'are mostly attending'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas within paragraphs is disjointed. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as pronoun use and dangling phrases. To improve, the writer needs to ensure smoother transitions between ideas and a more logical, cohesive flow throughout the entire text.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The lexical resource is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with several noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. Examples of awkward phrasing and errors include 'diffferent', 'collage based', 'low classes take in', and 'peolpes'. While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'private studios', 'ballet', and 'modern dance', the control over less common items is weak. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their vocabulary range, use word forms and collocations more accurately, and eliminate basic spelling mistakes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple constructions and basic subject-verb patterns. Attempts at more complex sentences are often faulty, leading to frequent grammatical errors that can cause difficulty for the reader. There are notable issues with prepositions, articles, subject-verb agreement, and verb forms, such as 'the location of the where dance classes held', 'the most classes are held on private studios', and 'under 11 take moslty ballet dance'. Punctuation is also erratic in places, with misplaced full stops interrupting sentences. To improve, the writer needs to demonstrate greater control over complex sentence forms and significantly reduce the frequency of basic grammatical errors.
