Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of both charts and making relevant comparisons. You provide a clear overview in the second paragraph, outlining the overall proportions for locations and the highest and lowest points for the dance classes. In the body paragraphs, you select key data points accurately, such as private studios at 48 percent and ballet under 11 at 600 members. However, some parts of the response are more fully developed than others; for instance, the details for the 11 to 16 age group and tap dance are somewhat rushed and incomplete at the end of the text. To reach a higher band, ensure that all selected data points receive equal expansion and detail throughout the body paragraphs.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
Your writing maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introduction to the overview and body paragraphs. You use basic cohesive devices and transition signals effectively, such as 'Overall', 'Looking first at the locations', and 'Turning to the types'. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and slightly faulty, particularly in the third paragraph where run-on structures like 'where college-based studios had smallest shares of 10%, where as school halls... is moderate' disrupt the flow and make referencing less clear. To improve further, you should ensure that your sentences are neatly chunked with accurate transition markers and correct punctuation rather than stringing clauses together excessively.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully attempting less common items and descriptive phrases such as 'accounted for the largest proportion', 'constituted the smallest proportion', and 'preferred by different age groups'. Communication is generally clear, but there are some noticeable vocabulary and word-choice errors, such as spelling 'comunity' instead of 'community' and awkward phrasing like 'members' instead of 'students' when referring to the chart data. To achieve a higher band, you need to use a wider range of less common vocabulary with greater precision, ensuring correct spelling, word formation, and natural collocations throughout your response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating that you can construct compound and complex sentences to present data. You show control over basic structures and verb tenses when describing the charts. However, there are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as article omissions ('had smallest shares' instead of 'had the smallest shares'), awkward prepositions ('after completion of school periods'), and run-on sentences with incorrect punctuation ('where college-based studios... at 10%, where as...'). These errors do not impede communication, which keeps the response at the current level. To progress, you should aim for a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and better punctuation control.
