Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting on both charts, but the coverage is uneven. While the pie chart and the under-11 age group are discussed with relevant data, the information for the 11-16 age group contains inaccuracies. Specifically, the student states that the information is given for the age group between 11 and 16 in Australia, missing that the bar chart covers two distinct age groups (under 11 and 11-16). Furthermore, some ideas are under-developed, such as the vague reporting of the community halls percentage. To reach a higher band, the response would need to accurately capture all details from the visual data without misinterpreting the demographic scope and by fully expanding on every key feature presented.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and body paragraphs dedicated to each chart. Progression is generally evident, moving logically from the pie chart locations to the bar chart age groups. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty. Devices such as 'Whereas', 'While', and 'Then' are used rather rigidly, and referencing is occasionally awkward, such as starting a sentence with 'Then, the position is a secured by...'. Paragraphing is present and separates the visual features adequately, but paragraph internal cohesion requires smoother transitions to achieve a higher band.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms like 'proportion', 'adolescents', 'ratio', and 'former'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, but this is accompanied by some word-choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'position is a secured' and referring to types of dance as 'Tap type' instead of just 'tap'. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary choices do not impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the intended meaning despite minor slips.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses and comparative forms. However, there are notable errors in grammar and punctuation. Examples include capitalization and punctuation issues ('Overall, It is clearly seen...'), missing articles ('at private studio', 'have 10% students'), and prepositional inconsistencies ('for children of age under 11'). These errors persist throughout the text, though they rarely impede overall communication. To move higher, the writer needs to eliminate basic structural errors and increase the frequency of error-free complex sentences.
