Student answer (Band 5.0)
The pie chart illustrates the proportion where the young people in a town in Australia are attending dance classes, whereas the bar chart compares the types of dance classes preferred by students under 11 and students between 11 and 16.
Overall, it is evident that the students mainly prefered private studios over other spot of dance classes. Notabely, ballet is the most common choise among the students under 11 whereas student aged 11-16 prefered Modern dance.
The students atteded the dance classes primarly on the private studios which accounted for 48%, that is double than the school halls (after-school) at 24% and it is also the second most prefered location. And, collage-based studios and Community halls and others contributed for 10% and 18% respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response only partially addresses the task requirements and is notably incomplete, ending abruptly mid-sentence ('The students under...'). Furthermore, the Length Check confirms that the text falls short of the required 150-word minimum at only 127 words. While the student attempts to provide an overview and mentions some key data points from the charts, such as the 48% figure for private studios and the general preferences for different dance types, the development is limited and truncated. To reach a higher band, the response must be fully completed to cover all parts of the visual data comprehensively, including an adequate word count and a fully developed conclusion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates some overall organization, opening with an introductory sentence that outlines both charts and using an 'Overall' paragraph to highlight general trends. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression due to the incomplete nature of the essay. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'whereas' and 'respectively', but some transitions feel mechanical or awkward, like starting a sentence with 'And, collage-based studios'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the final paragraph is left as an incomplete fragment. To improve in this area, the student needs to ensure logical development from introduction to a fully realized conclusion, using cohesive links more naturally and avoiding abrupt breaks in the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for conveying basic information, containing lexical items such as 'proportion', 'prefered', 'choise', and 'contributed'. There are several noticeable lexical and spelling errors that detract from the quality of the response, including 'prefered' (preferred), 'Notabely' (Notably), 'choise' (choice), 'atteded' (attended), 'primarly' (primarily), and 'collage-based' (college-based). Additionally, collocation and word choice are sometimes awkward, such as referring to private studios as a 'spot of dance classes'. To achieve a higher band, the student should expand their range of vocabulary, use less common lexical items with greater precision, and eliminate spelling and word-form errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, attempting some complex forms with relative clauses and subordinating conjunctions, but these attempts are frequently accompanied by errors. Examples include 'the proportion where the young people' (where is misused for in which or the percentage of) and 'double than' (double that of). There are also instances of awkward phrasing and articles, such as 'primarly on the private studios'. Frequent grammatical errors, combined with the incomplete final sentence, indicate restricted control over sentence patterns. To progress, the writer needs to increase grammatical accuracy, improve control over prepositions and comparative structures, and produce error-free complex sentences.
