Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of both the pie chart and the bar chart, satisfying the minimum requirements. The overview mentions general proportions for locations, and body paragraphs present data such as the 48 percent in private studios and the breakdown of dance types by age. However, some parts of the task are developed more fully than others, and a few details are slightly unclear or imprecise, such as the phrasing 'while others from different halls' in the introduction. To reach a higher band, the overview could be more comprehensive by capturing the main trends across both charts more clearly, and ideas should be fully extended without minor generalisations or vague references to data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from location data to dance types by age group. Paragraphing is utilised to separate the two main charts, and cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'Around half', and 'One-tenth' are used to connect ideas. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical or faulty. For instance, transitional phrases like 'On the other hand' are repeated frequently where contrast is not always strictly required, and referencing at times lacks precision, such as in the sentence 'young children, who are in between 11 and 16 years old in this class are only 300'. Improving the flexibility and natural flow of cohesive ties would elevate this response.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate basic data points effectively with terms like 'proportion', 'studio', and 'community halls'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, but this is accompanied by some inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and spelling. For instance, 'proprtion' contains a spelling error, and phrases like 'the strength of kids and children are almost same' demonstrate awkward collocation and lexical control. Minor word choice slips do not impede communication, but to achieve a higher score, the writer needs to demonstrate a more precise and varied range of vocabulary with fewer errors in word forms and spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses such as 'who are in between 11 and 16 years old'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but they rarely impede communication. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues, such as 'The given pie chart and bar chart illustrates' (instead of 'illustrate') and 'the strength of kids and children are almost same' (instead of 'is almost the same'). Additionally, missing articles and awkward prepositional use appear in sentences like 'learning dance in the private studios'. A greater frequency of error-free complex sentences and tighter control over basic agreement rules are needed to progress further.
