Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response satisfies most requirements of the task by covering both the pie chart and the line graph, presenting a clear overview and highlighting key features such as the dominant private studio location and the prominent age groups for ballet and modern dance. However, some parts of the response are slightly under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies, such as mischaracterising the data points for tap dance. To reach a higher band, the student should ensure that all key trends are accurately reported and supported with precise data without vague generalisations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a logical division into paragraphs, separating the introduction, overview, and individual chart analyses. Cohesive devices are attempted, but some referencing and linking are mechanical or faulty, such as the abrupt start to the second paragraph ('overall it can be seen that') and repetitive phrasing in transitions. To progress further, the student needs to use a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure smoother progression between sentences and paragraphs.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating basic concepts related to the charts. However, the range is limited and the text contains noticeable word choice and spelling errors, such as 'chategories' instead of 'categories' and awkward phrasing like 'choosed' instead of 'chosen'. Less common lexical items are attempted but lack precision. To achieve a higher score, the student should expand their range of vocabulary, improve word formation, and ensure accurate spelling and collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but attempts at complex structures frequently contain errors. There are issues with punctuation, capitalization at the beginning of sentences, and relative clauses, such as 'who age under 11' instead of 'who are aged under 11'. While these errors rarely impede overall communication, they occur regularly. To improve, the student needs to exercise greater control over grammatical structures, particularly verb forms, prepositions within phrases, and sentence punctuation.
