Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all parts of the visual data by summarising the location of dance classes and the types of dance classes across the two age groups. There is a clear overview provided in the second paragraph, highlighting the main trends such as the dominance of private studios and the contrasting preferences for ballet and modern dance between the two age groups. Key features are accurately reported and supported with data from the charts, such as 48% for private studios and 600 students for ballet among the younger cohort. The ideas are well extended and supported, though the writing tends to report figures sequentially rather than fully integrating complex comparisons, which prevents it from reaching a higher level of achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The text maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introduction to the overview and body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used adequately to separate the different charts and details. However, cohesion can sometimes feel a bit mechanical or faulty, with punctuation issues around transition words and slight lapses in referencing, such as the redundant repetition of phrasing across paragraphs. While the organizational structure is clear enough to guide the reader through the data smoothly, a more flexible and natural use of cohesive devices would be needed to progress further.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student displays an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common terminology related to data reporting and dance styles, such as proportion, participation, and ballet. However, there are notable lexical inaccuracies, word-choice errors, and awkward phrasing throughout the text, including 'pie chat' instead of chart, 'dance lectures' instead of classes, and spelling or form errors like 'keens' and 'kinds' instead of children or kids. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they reflect a limited control over collocation and word formation that keeps the lexical score constrained.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like 'While, the bar chart illustrates...' and 'whereas tap dance was lower'. There are several errors in grammar and punctuation, such as incorrect spacing around punctuation marks, capitalization errors in the middle of sentences, and occasional subject-verb agreement slips, including 'number of kids under 11 choosing ballet were 600'. These errors persist throughout the text, though they rarely impede communication. To improve further, the student needs to demonstrate a higher frequency of error-free complex sentences and better control over punctuation rules.
