Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by covering both charts comprehensively. A clear overview is presented, highlighting the dominance of private studios in terms of location and the varied preferences across age groups for different dance types. Key features are accurately reported and supported with data from the visual sources, such as private studios standing at 48% and ballet reaching nearly 600 students for the under-11 age group. The response demonstrates a clear understanding of the data, extending and supporting ideas effectively, although a slightly broader comparative analysis between categories would push the score even higher.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response maintains a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. It is divided into an introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs detailing the pie chart and bar chart respectively. Cohesive devices such as "Overall," "On the other hand," "In contrast," and "Moving on to the bar chart" are used to guide the reader through the data. However, cohesion sometimes feels slightly mechanical due to repetitive transitional phrasing, and referencing could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but bridging the gap to a fully natural and flexible flow of ideas is still required for the next band level.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying information about percentages, age groups, and comparative quantities. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as "proportion," "dominates," and "accounted for," showing an awareness of academic style. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as "under 11 people," "reflets" (spelling slip), and "aged people." These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the response from achieving a higher band. Expanding the range of vocabulary and ensuring greater precision in word choice and spelling will improve this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over sentence structure. Examples like "almost 600 students under 11 age group participates in ballet dance class which represented the highest number" show an attempt at complex clauses. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly concerning article usage, subject-verb agreement (e.g., "participates" instead of participate, or "private studios shows"), prepositions, and punctuation (such as missing spaces after commas and periods). While these errors rarely impede overall communication, they represent a recurring pattern of inaccuracies that keeps the grammatical score at this level.
