Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting on both the locations of dance classes and the types of classes attended by different age groups, supported by accurate figures from the charts. An overview is provided in the opening paragraphs, outlining the main features such as private studios being the most common location and the varying preferences between age groups. Key data points are accurately highlighted, including the 48% share for private studios and the specific attendance numbers for ballet and modern dance. However, while the main features are covered, some parts of the data are slightly under-developed or repetitive, such as the separate paragraphs detailing locations and types of classes, which prevents the response from reaching the highest band. To move further up, the overview could be more fully integrated, and comparisons between the categories could be drawn more sharply throughout the body paragraphs.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response maintains an overall coherent structure, with information divided into an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs covering locations and types of dance classes. However, the logical progression is hindered by repetitive paragraphing and somewhat mechanical or faulty referencing. For instance, the transition between ideas can be abrupt, seen in phrases like 'Although, Least famous are the college studios', where punctuation and cohesive devices are misused. Referencing across sentences occasionally creates confusion rather than smooth transitions, and paragraphing could be used more purposefully to group related information together. To improve cohesion, the writer should employ a wider range of linking words more naturally and ensure that sentences flow logically from one to the next without abrupt shifts in focus.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, successfully conveying information about percentages, numbers, and categories. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'comprising', 'enthusiasts', and 'exceeding', showing an awareness of style. However, there are notable word choice and phrasing inaccuracies that prevent a higher score, such as 'the type of classes in children under age of 11 most popular' and describing college studios as 'Least famous' rather than least popular. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate, and these minor lexical slips do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate greater precision in word choice and collocations, avoiding slightly unnatural phrasing when discussing statistical data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over basic structures and attempting more complex constructions, such as relative clauses and participial phrases ('comprising 48% of the students'). However, there are some grammar and punctuation errors scattered throughout the text. Examples include missing articles ('in private studios with school halls in the second place', 'in teenagers'), awkward preposition use ('in children under age of 11'), and minor punctuation flaws such as the misplaced comma and capitalisation in 'Although, Least famous'. While these errors rarely impede communication, they recur often enough to keep the grammar score at this level. To achieve a higher band, the writer must produce a greater proportion of error-free sentences while using a wider variety of complex grammatical structures with consistent accuracy.
