Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt by presenting an overview of both the pie chart and the bar chart, alongside relevant data points and comparisons. The main features are identified, such as private studios being the most popular location and the contrasting preferences across age groups for different dance types (e.g., modern being highest for teens versus ballet for under-11s). However, some parts of the task are handled more fully than others; certain descriptions of data are slightly muddled or under-developed, particularly in the summary sentence of the second paragraph ("as well as modern in school-aged child"), which lacks clarity. To reach a higher band, the overview and supporting details need to be expressed with greater precision and full development throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from an introductory paragraph to an overview, followed by separate body paragraphs for the pie chart and the bar chart. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two visual sources. Cohesive devices are employed, such as "First of all", "In contrast", and "Furthermore", though referencing and cohesion occasionally feel somewhat mechanical or slightly faulty, such as in the phrasing linking the groups in the final sentences. Pronoun referencing and inter-sentence connections could be managed more flexibly to achieve a more natural flow of ideas across the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
An adequate range of vocabulary is deployed for the task, allowing the student to successfully describe proportions and trends using terms like "delineates", "destination", "proportion", and various dance genres. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, though this is sometimes accompanied by word-choice errors or awkward collocations, such as "recent destination of dance classes", "types of dance classes which are done", and referring to students as "scholars" or "youngsters" where simpler, more accurate terms would suit the academic context better. Spelling and word formation are generally clear enough that communication is not impeded, but precision needs improvement for a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The text demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting relative clauses and comparative structures. However, there are persistent errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly involving subject-verb agreement and prepositions, such as "college-based studios was the least", "the highest types of classes the under 11 participated", and "the under 11 had their preferred classes in ballet at approximately 600 students while a half of the students were the youngsters". While these errors rarely impede overall communication, they occur frequently enough alongside faulty complex structures to restrict the score at this level.
