Student answer (Band 6.5)
THE CHARTS ILLUSTRATE THE INFORMATION ABOUT THE LOCATION - PRIVATE STUDIOS, COLLEGE-BASED STUDIOS, SCHOOL HALLS AND COMMUNITY HALLS AS WELL AS TYPES OF DANCE CLASSES - BALLET, TAP OR MODERN CURRENTLY ATTENDING BY YOUNG PEOPLE IN TOWN IN AUSTRALIA.
OVERALL, IT IS QUITE EVIDENT THAT PRIVATE STUDIOS ACCOUNTED NEARLY HALF PROPORTION OF CHART, WHILST COLLEGE-BASED STUDIO RECORDED LOWEST VALUE. NOTABLY, THE BAR CHART EMPHASISED CLEAR DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TWO AGE GROUP - UNDER 11 AND 11-16 IN BALLET AND MODERN DANCE.
LOOKING FIRST AT PIE CHART, PRIVATE STUDIOS CONSTITUTED 48% OF TOTAL, MAKING IT THE LARGEST SEGEMENT IN THE CHART. THIS IS FOLLOWED BY SCHOOL HALLS ( AFTER-SCHOOL), WHICHIS ACCOUNTED FOR 24%. WHILE COMMUNITY HALLS AND COLLEGE-BASED STUDIO RECORDED 18% AND 10%, RESPECIVELY. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE HIGHEST AND LOWEST CATEGORIES WAS APPROXIMATELY 38%.
AS FOR BAR CHART, BALLET DANCE RECORDED HIGHEST NUMBER OF STUDENTS COMPARE OTHER CATEGORIES IN AGE GROUP OG UNDER 11. FOR AGE GROUP 11-16, MODERN DANCE HAD CONSIDERABLY HIGHEST FIGURE ( NEARLY 520), THIS WAS FOLLOWED BY TAP DANCE, WHICH STOOD AT NEARLY 420. IN CONTRAST, MODERN DANCE HAD THE SMALLEST VALUE AT JUST 300 FOR UNDER 11 AGE GORUP.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt by summarising both visual datasets. The overview effectively highlights key features, noting that private studios dominated the pie chart while college-based studios recorded the lowest value, alongside contrasting trends between the age groups in the bar chart. Main features and appropriate comparisons are reported accurately, such as noting that ballet was the most popular dance for under-11s while modern dance peaked for the 11-16 age group. However, there is a minor mechanical error in reading the data where modern dance for the older age group is cited as nearly 520, which is accurate, but some ideas could be more fully extended to reach the highest standard. Overall, the content addresses the task requirements clearly and covers all relevant information.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The writing is divided into sensible paragraphs, starting with a clear introductory paraphrase, followed by an overview paragraph, and then detailed body paragraphs examining each chart in turn. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to guide the reader through the data, such as 'LOOKING FIRST AT PIE CHART', 'THIS IS FOLLOWED BY', and 'IN CONTRAST'. While paragraphing is used appropriately and the overall arrangement is coherent, referencing and transitional links occasionally feel slightly mechanical, preventing the response from achieving a higher rating. Nevertheless, the logical sequence of information remains clear from beginning to end.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
An adequate range of vocabulary is used for the task, allowing the writer to successfully convey numerical and visual data. The response attempts some less common vocabulary items and descriptive phrasing, such as 'constituted', 'largest segment', and 'proportion of chart'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and form, such as writing 'CURRENTLY ATTENDING BY' instead of 'currently attended by', 'SEGEMENT' instead of 'segment', and 'OG UNDER 11' instead of 'of under 11'. Additionally, minor prepositional and phrasing slips occur, but these lexical errors do not impede communication, placing the response squarely within the band requirements.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, attempting various descriptive clauses to report the data. While there are some error-free sentences, frequent grammatical errors persist throughout the text, particularly concerning articles, prepositions, and verb forms. Examples include 'ILLUSTRATE THE INFORMATION ABOUT' with an unnecessary article, 'ACCOUNTED NEARLY HALF PROPORTION' missing the preposition 'for', and missing articles in 'RECORDED LOWEST VALUE' and 'AT JUST 300 FOR UNDER 11 AGE GORUP'. Furthermore, capitalization is used entirely throughout the response, which is inappropriate. These errors in grammar and punctuation are noticeable and require careful reading, though they rarely completely impede communication.
