Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 150 words, containing only 135 words (with 11 words copied directly from the prompt discounted). The task is only partially addressed, with a limited and somewhat repetitive selection of main features. While the student attempts an overview and touches upon data from both the pie chart and the bar chart, the ideas are underdeveloped and lack sufficient detail. For instance, the description of the dance types only focuses on ballet and partially mentions modern dance, while tap dance is omitted entirely. Furthermore, there are inaccuracies in reporting the data, such as stating that students 'danced in ballet' for the 11 to 16 age group, which misinterprets the figures. To improve, the writer must ensure all parts of the visual data are adequately covered, all key features are accurately reported, and the word count comfortably exceeds the minimum threshold.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some basic organisation with attempts at paragraphing and basic cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'After this', and 'Furthermore'. However, the response lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is somewhat erratic, with the introduction and overview being awkwardly combined or fragmented. The use of cohesive devices is frequently mechanical and repetitive, and referencing is occasionally unclear, which disrupts the flow of the text. To reach a higher band, the writer should structure the response logically with a distinct introduction, a clear overarching overview paragraph, and well-organised body paragraphs that compare data smoothly without relying on repetitive transitional phrases.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task, with noticeable errors in word choice, form, and spelling that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. Examples of lexical inaccuracies include 'pie cart' instead of 'pie chart', 'coollege' and 'colledge' instead of 'college', and awkward phrasing such as 'prefer to ballet dance' and 'are danced in ballet'. The range of vocabulary is restricted, relying heavily on repeating words from the prompt like 'percentage', 'dance classes', and 'private studios' without demonstrating flexibility or precision. To progress, the student needs to expand their lexical repertoire, use correct word forms (e.g., noun vs. verb forms), and eliminate spelling mistakes by proofreading their work carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing demonstrates a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences and basic subject-verb constructions. When the student attempts more complex sentences, they are often faulty, featuring frequent errors in grammar, prepositions, and articles. Examples include 'illustrates the information about on the location', 'the highest percentage of dance are held', and 'are recorded 48% whereas, the lowest percentage classes in colledge based studios' (which lacks a main verb). Frequent grammatical errors cause difficulty and strain for the reader throughout the text. To achieve a higher band, the writer must incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures while exercising better control over basic grammar, verb forms, and prepositional phrases.
