Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task partially by attempting to cover both the pie chart and the line graph, providing an overview and some key figures. However, the details provided are limited and contain several inaccurate data reports. For instance, the student states that ballet dance reached more than 600 students under 11, which is generally accurate, but misinterprets the data for modern and tap dance in places, such as claiming modern dance had more than 500 students under 11 when the chart shows it at approximately 300 for that age group. The overview is overly simplistic, and the overall development of ideas is restricted due to these inaccuracies and under-developed comparisons between the two charts.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some organisation in the response, with a clear four-paragraph structure separating the introduction, overview, pie chart details, and line graph details. However, there is no clear overall progression of ideas, and cohesive devices are frequently repetitive, mechanical, or inaccurate (such as overusing 'overthere' and starting multiple sentences with basic transitional adverbs like 'Whereas' and 'Meanwhile'). Referencing is also occasionally unclear, making the flow somewhat disjointed and repetitive as the writer moves through the data points.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. There are noticeable lexical errors, word-form issues, and typos that stem from vocabulary misuse, such as 'bdance', 'Similaily', 'symbolize' instead of 'illustrate', 'higest', 'morden', and 'peacked'. The writer attempts to use some less common terms like 'proportion' and 'fraction', but inaccuracies in word choice and spelling cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the response from achieving a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer uses a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic complex patterns that are frequently faulty. There are frequent errors in grammar, articles, prepositions, and plurals throughout the text, such as 'location of bdance classes', 'private studio covered 48% of area overthere', 'schools halls', and 'age gap between 11-16'. These frequent errors in basic and attempted complex structures cause noticeable difficulty for the reader.
