Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by presenting an overview of both the pie chart and the bar chart, alongside accurate supporting data. Key features, such as the dominance of private studios (48%) and the popularity of ballet among under-11s versus modern dance for the 11-16 age group, are clearly reported. The comparisons made between categories are logical and well-grounded in the visual data. While the response covers all required aspects and presents a clear overall trend, some ideas and supporting details lean towards a tendency to over-generalize or present simple lists of data rather than fully extending every analytical point. To reach a higher level, the response would need to integrate the data more fluidly with deeper analysis of the proportions and age-related trends.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the information logically, separating the introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related ideas, with the second body paragraph focusing on the pie chart and the third on the bar chart. However, cohesion is at times faulty and mechanical. For instance, sentences are occasionally fragmented or awkwardly linked using cohesive devices such as 'Where' and 'Meanwhile' at the beginning of sentences where they do not function effectively as connectors. Referencing and progression between sentences can feel disjointed due to these mechanical transitions. To improve cohesion, a wider and more natural variety of transitional phrases should be employed to ensure smoother movement of ideas throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the main features of the charts using appropriate terms such as 'proportion', 'popular', and 'age group'. The student attempts less common vocabulary, but this is accompanied by noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and spelling, such as 'loactions', 'studious' instead of 'studios', and 'modren' instead of 'modern'. These errors do not completely impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score. To achieve a higher standard, the writer must expand their range of vocabulary, ensure accurate spelling of common task-related terms, and demonstrate greater precision in word choice without relying on repetitive formulations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, attempting to describe proportions and age distributions. However, control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent, with frequent errors present in sentence boundaries and dependent clauses. Examples include sentence fragments such as 'Where the bar chart illustrates three types of dance classes based on the age group.' and 'For college-based studious only 10% of young people are attending.' Furthermore, errors occur in prepositions and verb tense consistency. These issues mean that while the meaning remains generally clear, the frequency of grammatical slips prevents the response from demonstrating the stable control required for higher bands. Improving sentence boundary awareness and reducing basic structural errors will significantly strengthen this area.
