Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting on both charts, providing a clear overview, and selecting key features such as private studios being the most common location and the variations in dance types across age groups. However, some ideas are under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies in data reporting, such as stating 'Ballet students who were under the age of 11' without noting the specific figure of 600 clearly in relation to the chart scale, or slight discrepancies in reading the exact figures for older modern and tap dancers. The overall trends are successfully identified, but further extension and precision in data selection would be needed to reach a higher level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response presents an overall coherent arrangement with a clear attempt to group information logically into an introduction, an overview, a location paragraph, and a data paragraph for the dance types. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical, with abrupt transitions between ideas and repetitive phrasing such as 'were on third stage in this location' or 'While the number of...'. Paragraphing is present, but referencing and logical progression between sentences can feel disjointed at times, characteristic of a mid-level performance where cohesive devices are not yet used with complete flexibility.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common vocabulary related to charts and statistics like 'percentage', 'location', and 'common'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors ('australian', 'amoung', 'modren', 'Wheares') and awkward word choices or collocations ('largest in this location', 'lowest then others in this classes'). These errors do not completely impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score because precision and control over word forms and spelling are inconsistent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting comparative structures like 'while the number of students in Tap and Modern dance was lower than that in Ballet'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('Ballet students were 300, which was lowest then others in this classes'), capitalization issues ('australian'), and punctuation flaws like fragment sentences ('While the most popular type of dance between children 11-16'). These errors occur regularly across the text, though they rarely impede overall communication.
