Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of both the pie chart and the bar chart. You provide a clear overview in the second paragraph, highlighting the most popular and least popular locations and trends across age groups. Key data points are accurately selected and compared, such as noting that private studios are the most popular location at 48 percent, and detailing the contrast between under-11s preferring ballet and 11 to 16-year-olds favoring modern dance. To reach a higher band, the analysis could extend further by synthesizing the data more tightly or pointing out subtler proportional relationships across the charts rather than listing the figures sequentially.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay displays a clear overall progression, dividing information logically into an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs dedicated to each chart. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader through the data, with phrases like 'Overall,' 'In the pie chart,' and 'However' signaling transitions effectively. The logical organization meets the requirements of the lower band well and shows partial elements of the higher band. However, some referencing and transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive—such as starting consecutive sentences with 'In the pie chart' and 'In the bar chart'—and paragraphing could be tighter to ensure a more seamless flow between ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
Your vocabulary is adequate to communicate the main points of the visual data, successfully employing terms like 'proportion,' 'demonstrates,' and 'consistency.' You make attempts at less common vocabulary, but there are several instances of inaccurate word choice and awkward collocations, such as 'highest used place' instead of 'most popular location,' and 'children who are aged between 11 and 16 like modern dance more' which lacks precision. Additionally, minor slips occur, such as 'dance are quite unpopular' where subject-verb agreement is affected by lexical confusion. To improve, focus on using precise academic collocations and varying your descriptive verbs.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and comparative structures. There are several grammatical errors present, including prepositions and articles ('information of the young people,' 'different aged group,' 'to young people'), as well as word form and agreement slips ('Modern dance are quite unpopular'). While these errors do not impede communication and key sentences remain understandable, they occur with enough frequency to prevent the essay from achieving a higher score. Greater control over complex sentence patterns and prepositional phrases is needed to ensure more error-free sentences.
