Student answer (Band 7.0)
The pie chart illustrates the information of various places where dance classes take place in Australia, whereas the bar chart shows the number of young participants in three different dance types.
Overall, private studios are the most famous places for dance classes in Australia. In addition, ballet is preferred dance type for children below 11; however, for the participants over 11 to 16, modern dance is more appealing.
To begin with, private studios account for 48% of dancing sessions. Similarly, school halls, where dance session are being held after school, contribute half as compared to private studios. Only 18% is attributed to community halls and other venues, while college studios are the least popular locations contributing only 10%.
In addition, among the three dance types, ballet has the highest proportion of students below 11, where over 600 children are under 11 which is twice as compared to participants over 11. On the other hand, modern dance is more popular among children of age 11-16. In addition, tap dance is equally famous in both age groups

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of both the pie chart and the bar chart, with relevant comparisons made. For instance, the student correctly highlights private studios as the leading location and contrasts the age preferences for ballet and modern dance. The overall trend and key data points are appropriately selected and presented accurately, fulfilling the requirements for a solid overview and detailed body paragraphs. To reach the next level, the development of ideas could be slightly more refined, ensuring that all comparisons, such as the tap dance figures mentioned at the end, are fully elaborated rather than stated too briefly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
There is a clear logical organization and progression throughout the response. The introduction successfully paraphrases the prompt, followed by a well-crafted overview paragraph that captures the main trends. Cohesive devices are used appropriately to link ideas, such as 'To begin with', 'Similarly', and 'On the other hand', which guide the reader smoothly between the two charts. Paragraphing is used logically to separate the overview, the location data, and the dance type data. To achieve a higher standard, the management of referencing and cohesion could be made even more seamless and less reliant on mechanical transition phrases.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully attempting less common items and descriptive phrases such as 'illustrates', 'proportion', and 'participants'. Word choices generally communicate the intended meaning clearly, though there are occasional lapses in precision and collocation, such as referring to private studios as 'the most famous places' instead of the most popular, and describing ballet as the 'preferred dance type' rather than the most popular. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate, but refining vocabulary choices to be more formal and precise will elevate the lexical quality.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over relative clauses and comparative structures, such as 'where over 600 children are under 11 which is twice as compared to participants over 11'. There are some minor grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as the omission of an article in 'is preferred dance type' and slight clumsiness in comparison structures like 'twice as compared to'. However, these errors do not impede communication, and punctuation is handled adequately. To secure a higher band, the writer needs to produce a greater frequency of error-free complex sentences with flawless structural control.
