Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of both charts and making relevant comparisons. For instance, the writer correctly notes that private studios are the most popular location at 48% and that ballet is the most popular dance for children under 11, with modern dance preferred by the 11–16 age group. However, some ideas are under-developed or imprecise; for example, the description of the venue percentages contains confusing phrasing, such as stating 'school halls are higher than the community halls 24%,' and there are minor inaccuracies in reading the data, such as claiming 600 students attend ballet when the chart shows approximately that figure. The overview attempts to summarize main trends, but the overall development remains somewhat basic and disjointed, fitting the level where all parts are covered though some parts lack thorough development.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement by dividing the information into logical sections covering the pie chart and the bar chart, alongside an introduction and conclusion. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and referencing is occasionally unclear. For example, transitional phrases like 'The term of dance types' and 'lastly, college based studio attend 10% in dance classes' feel awkward and disrupt the logical flow. Paragraphing is attempted, but sentences often run together without smooth linking, and the internal progression within body paragraphs lacks clear signposting. While the structure is generally discernible, the inadequate and repetitive use of cohesive devices prevents the text from achieving a higher level of fluid progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical resource is adequate for the task, providing a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate the main points about locations and dance types. The writer attempts less common vocabulary, such as 'preference,' 'popular,' and 'venues,' but this is marred by frequent word choice, word form, and spelling errors, including 'coummunity' for community, 'paticuraly' for particularly, 'accprding' for according, and awkward phrasing like 'bullet is paticulary among in youn children.' Although these slips and inaccuracies do not severely impede communication, they restrict the vocabulary score, as the control over less common lexical items lacks precision and stylistic appropriateness.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but attempts at complex structures are often flawed, and there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. Examples include missing articles ('attend private studio classes,' 'in dance classes'), preposition errors ('attend 10% in'), subject-verb agreement issues ('the location of dance classes... is' versus fragmented clauses), and punctuation omissions. While sentences are generally understandable and communication is rarely completely blocked, the presence of frequent grammatical inaccuracies across basic and complex patterns limits the accuracy to the target band.
