Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response makes an attempt to present the main features of the charts, noting the highest and lowest locations for dance classes and mentioning some age group data for different dance types. However, the coverage is only partial and lacks clarity in places. For instance, the reference to 'the proportion of 48' lacks a clear percentage sign or unit initially, and the data for dance types is expressed in a confusing, run-on manner, such as 'nearly 300 and 420 were tap dance students'. Furthermore, the overview is rather basic and does not fully synthesize the broader trends across both charts. To move higher, the response needs to present a more fully developed overview and ensure all key data points are reported accurately and clearly without ambiguity.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The text shows some basic organization, separating the introduction, overview, location details, and dance type details into paragraphs. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression, and the transitions between ideas feel mechanical. For instance, starting paragraphs with 'Overall, The...' and 'Moreover, the 600 number...' creates a disjointed flow. Cohesive devices are used rather repetitively or inaccurately, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the pronoun use when describing age groups. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to ensure a smoother logical progression between sentences and paragraphs, using a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices naturally.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task, with noticeable errors that occasionally impede communication or cause strain for the reader. There are several spelling and word choice errors, such as 'participents' instead of participants, 'interset' instead of interest, 'dace' instead of dance, and 'choosed' instead of chose. The student also struggles with appropriate collocation and phrasing, such as 'attended dance classes on different locations' instead of 'at different locations'. To improve, the writer must expand their lexical repertoire, pay closer attention to word forms and spelling, and practice standard collocations associated with describing statistical data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple sentences and basic coordination. Attempts at more complex structures are frequently faulty, such as 'under 11 students are more active number of paricipents compare to 11 to 16 age group'. There are frequent errors in articles, prepositions, and subject-verb agreement, such as 'The private studios has' and 'college-based studios has least number'. Punctuation is also inconsistent. To reach the next level, the student needs to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence forms while maintaining better control over basic grammar rules, tense consistency, and prepositions.
