Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response covers the main parts of the task by addressing both the pie chart and the graph, identifying key features such as the dominance of private studios at 48 percent and the peak for modern dance at 520 students. However, the treatment of the data is limited and partially incomplete. For instance, the student misses college-based studios entirely in the text, and some data points are misreported or difficult to follow, such as the statement about tap dance numbers. Additionally, the overview is weak, lacking a clear, concise summary of the overall trends shown across both visuals. To reach a higher level, the response would need to present a fully developed overview and report all key data accurately without omitting significant categories.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation in the response, with separate paragraphs dedicated to the pie chart and the graph, and the text begins with a basic introductory sentence. However, there is no clear overall progression or logical flow connecting the sentences smoothly. Cohesive devices are basic, repetitive, and at times inaccurate, such as the abrupt transitions between sentences and the mechanical listing of percentages. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion is weak, leading to a disjointed reading experience. Referencing is occasionally unclear, making it hard to follow which age groups or categories certain figures refer to. To improve, the writer should use a wider variety of appropriate cohesive ties and ensure a smoother, logical development of ideas from introduction to details.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic information about the charts, featuring words like "prefered", "students", and "dance". There are noticeable spelling errors throughout the text, including "tye", "australia", "prefered", "studio", "communty", "ther", and "sudent". Word choice is basic and repetitive, and attempts at less common vocabulary are generally absent. These lexical limitations and frequent spelling errors cause some distraction and difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher standard, the student needs to expand their range of vocabulary, incorporate less common synonyms and collocations related to data reporting, and pay closer attention to accurate spelling and word formation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response displays a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences, while attempts at complex or longer sentences are frequently faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors involving verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and missing articles or prepositions, such as writing "The graph illustrate that there are two category" and "Around 600 student choose". Punctuation is also weak, with missing capitalisation at the beginning of sentences and missing full stops between clauses, culminating in run-on sentences like "graph.we saw". These frequent errors cause considerable difficulty for the reader and reflect a weak control over basic sentence patterns. To progress, the writer must focus on foundational grammar rules, including pluralisation, correct verb forms, and proper sentence punctuation.
